Equador Rain Forest Kids Project

The text bellow was sent by Charley Jonnes from Equador:

Sometimes we talk and reflect about first meeting capoeira , or about the changes it has made to us as people. When Mestre João Grande talks about capoeira coming from within the earth he may be refering also to the point that capoeira exists within us humans in different dimensions. Practicing capoeira with teenagers from the Sani community deep in the Ecuadorian rainforest certinately affirm the understanding that this art is natural to us and manifests in many wonderful expressions in our walks of life. Arriving there the youngsters already sung Paraná ê , paraná ê, after encounters with travelling brazilians in the region, when we went through the first training sessions, the basic movements, aú, meia lua greeted with delight as the youngsters grabbed the chance to try capoeira angola. We trained for two weeks almost every day, sharing movements and music. The berimbau was such a point of curiosity that I would just prepare the berimbaus for play and leave them to freely play and understand them, is this a weapon? For hunting?

Its always incredible to be amongst the enthusiasm of capoeiristas like this such a thirst for the art-form they themselves create a new bridge for capoeira right there in the indigenous heart of South America together with África the grandfathers of capoeira.

Within my residency I was also sharing classes if drawing and colour painting with adults and teenagers, I always feel capoeira and visual arts go hand in hand. Toward the end of my stay there in the rainforest community we showed the artworks amongst the community and practiced mini Roda’s of Capoeira Angola. Now the question is how to sustain this new inspiration there in the Sani community, am already looking forward to the next residency there.

The Sani community also runs there very own jungle lodge providing beautiful eco tourism in the heart of the rainforest, this eco-lodge is run by the community members themselves and staff from the community work within a rota, see more at www.sanilodge.com

I would like to thanks very much the help of Yanelys at the Sani office and the artistic assistance of Leonidas from the Sani community and everyone that participated and supported me there within the Sani community.

This video illustrates how capoeira classes may be combined with experience and emotion based group counselling on successfully interacting in life – within the realms of social work. It provides guidelines for those in charge of the classes. The methodology is meant to be used with a specific group of participants over a number of capoeira and counselling classes ideally over a period of at least a few months, involving at least 10 classes organised at regular intervals.
Capoeira classes will help build confidence and self esteem of participants. The counselling methodology is designed to capitalise on learning points capoeira classes provide concerning successfully interacting in life, i.e. to the advantage of individuals and their environments.
The capoeira instructor provides general guidelines to participants on how to interact in a positive way when practising and playing capoeira. Participants translate these guidelines into practical suggestions for positive behaviour which they wish to put into practice during the classes. The instructor continues to coach participants on putting it into practice during the classes.
Volens is a Belgian NGO that in Zimbabwe helps build capacities of direct care providers through a network of local NGOs for dealing with the emotional and psychological needs of orphans and vulnerable children.

(continua)

‘It was a really good experience. I think it’s one of the best workshops we’ve ever had in Bloomberg.’ (Participant feedback from Kabula workshop with Bloomberg)

Workshop overview:
Under stress, our body tightens up and our ability to think analytically decreases. How can we think quickly, while keeping our body relaxed, and increase our ability to think analytically under stress? How can we learn to think on our feet?“Thinking on your feet” is a workshop which uses the art form of capoeira to help you develop this skill. An exhilarating and elegant blend of dance, play, combat and music, capoeira has its roots among slaves in Brazil who used African rituals to sharpen their bodies and minds. It is now practiced around the world because of it’s recognised benefits to health and well-being.

About Kabula:
Kabula Arts & Culture is a London social enterprise delivering workshops in Afro-Brazilian culture to individuals, communities and organisations across the UK. “Thinking On Your Feet” workshops form the commercial arm of our enterprise and profits from this work are used to support our community based social initiatives.

We’ve been contacted by a project in Syria that’s using capoeira to help Palestinian-Iraqi children heal psycho-social wounds. We’ve just started to talk about collaborations with them and we’re hoping to bring you more news at some point. Nevertheless, we thought their project is so interesting that it would be worth bringing your attention to it.

BIDNA Capoeira is a new NGO (non-Governmental Organization) that aims to improve the well being of children and communities through capoeira.

The idea began last year at Al-Tanf Refugee Camp in Syria. Capoeira gave a safe and healthy outlet for people to express their anger and emotions. All ages were involved in playing and singing which had a harmonising effect on the community.

UNICEF has written a report, published on their website, recognizing the change of energy at the camp and the program’s significant psycho-social benefits.

For more info on BIDNA, please visit their website at www.bidnacapoeira.org.

Thanks to the generosity of the Big Lottery “Awards for All”, Kabula ran an outreach project, from November 2009 to March 2010, to teach children from seven years old to sixteen years old at the Stewarts Road Adventure Playground and Youth Centre, their first capoeira move – jinga, aul, etc…. The senior youth worker told us:

“This was something new for the children, who were really engaged by the music and the movement.” Also, one of the youth workers told us “we hear the children singing capoeira songs in the playground”…. it seems to have really got the children excited, doing new things, gaining in self-confidence!

Thank you Big Lottery!

We are now meeting new groups around London. If you are a school, youth club, community centre, and want to have capoeira classes coming directly to you, please be in touch through our website…
