Today is São Cosme, Damião & Doum day in Brazil.

It’s a very popular time in our calendar of traditions and festivities. We devote it to the children offering little bags with sweets to them in the streets and squares pretty much everywhere in Brazil. Considering the differences between both traditions, the giving sweets aspect could be compared with the Halloween in USA and parts of UK.

It’s also a day for eating the Carurú food, a very especial dish made with okra, praws, cashew nuts, peanuts, palm oil …

–

They say in some parts of Brazil, including here in Rio de Janeiro, when the guy falls in love he is “lascado” (which literaly means, in trouble).
That is exactly what I learned from LascaMão.
These musicians ”in love” (lascados) for percussion, which joined and invited me to integrate this group of people who are in love, studying and refining more and more their instrument skills with the full devotion of a true lover. And here I am, I was in love and threw myself, body and soul, in this sound coming from inside the heart where the emotion comes and slips through our hands, feet and throat, until it reaches“the sound of LascaMão and travels.”

Analimar

Brazil is a rhythmic country! One of the ways to understand it is through these musicians and their pandeiros, caxixis, atabaques, agogôs, berimbaus and surdos. This album is unmissable!

Carlo Alexandre

–

–

LascaMão is a percussion orchestra where the drums and also instruments of multiple tones and backgrounds talk harmoniously, creating a modern and universal music. Full of extreme Brazilianness. A show of percussion and their variety of rhythms, timbres and grooves.
The result is a sound and travel to dance to the beat of drums and voice through the Brazilian rhythms and the world.

Seu Jorge! Singing capoeira lyrics and other traditional cultures in his new album

Seu Jorge performing in a show

See above Seu Jorge & Almaz interpreting a capoeira song from his new album.

It’s known that Capoeira Culture has influenced many people among artist such like painters, poets, cineasts and many many musicians.

People like Vinicius de Moraes has composed the antologic Berimbau. Gilberto Gil by his side made a famous hit called Parabolicamará inspired by lyrics from Capoeira. Tom Jobin composed the internationally famous song Água de Beberwhich talks about love also using lyric from the “chulas” and “corridos” from the rich repertoire of our “jogo de mandinga”.

We could go on and on giving many examples ato show how deep this culture have already contributed to the Brazilian art and culture in that country as internationaly. Take some time and do your own research to find out how it happened also with other cultures such Candomblé in Bahia and Macumba & Umbanda in Rio.

Then, it’s not a surprise to see that during the carnival 2011 in Brazil many cultural groups were singing and playing
musics and instruments that before were known only by the practicioners of very closed and hermetic traditions. But, now they are been used for many people during the period of the Brazilian carnival.

It’s a rebirth, a kind of resurgency of the traditions in a more popular way coming to the streets again. We here believe that it can be very good for the self steam and proudness of the old masters and their wisdon. Therefore, for the cultural resistence and identity of our young people in here and for the continuity or our legacy.

Enjoy Seu Jorge and his Cala Boca Menino!

Click here to watch Jongo diminuto

Jongo or Caxambú is part of the legacy of the bantu people in Brazil and it’s still alive and it have been practiced for centuries in Rio, Minas and São Paulo. It’s worth to research and understand more about this tradition that is full of nuances and diferent accents depending on the region of Brazil that it’s practiced. We still can find it an many areas of São Paulo, Rio and Minas Gerais as the only states in which it exists now.

Since few years ago it satarted to gain more interest and became an object of research and attention from many people in Brazil and around the world. Acttually, it’s possible to understand more about Brazil and also about the Africans from Congo/Angola areas which brought many traditions with them.

Mestre Darcy da Serrinha and Messias do Jongo are some of the protagonist of the Jongo tradition in Rio and Minas Gerais. Have a look on the film documentaries about them.

Santa Rita do Bracuí, Fazenda São José, Jongo da Serrinha and many other tinny villages, quilombo communities, old farms or favelas in the southeast of Brazil still places in which you can go to meet this people and see their cultural manifestations which they manifest time by time during festive dates in year.

From the slavery time to our days Jongo and Caxambú continued as a way to preserve culture, identity and traditions as food, vestuary, language and story telling; as an aesthetic and as a philosophy of living for many people since the beggining of Brazil.
