Equador Rain Forest Kids Project

Sometimes we talk and reflect about first meeting capoeira , or about the changes it has made to us as people. When Mestre João Grande talks about capoeira coming from within the earth he may be refering also to the point that capoeira exists within us humans in different dimensions. Practicing capoeira with teenagers from the Sani community deep in the Ecuadorian rainforest certinately affirm the understanding that this art is natural to us and manifests in many wonderful expressions in our walks of life. Arriving there the youngsters already sung Paraná ê , paraná ê, after encounters with travelling brazilians in the region, when we went through the first training sessions, the basic movements, aú, meia lua greeted with delight as the youngsters grabbed the chance to try capoeira angola. We trained for two weeks almost every day, sharing movements and music. The berimbau was such a point of curiosity that I would just prepare the berimbaus for play and leave  them to freely play and understand them, is this a weapon? For hunting?

Punga dos Homens

Aos Capoeiras, pesquisadores, artistas, dançarinos…

Conforme consta dos respectivos materiais, anexos, o Centro Matroá estará realizando o evento ”A Punga dos Homens no Tambor de Crioula”, uma manifestação pouco conhecida, até mesmo por maranhenses, que não dos lugares aonde ainda essa manifestação se faz presente. Ao que tudo indica, a punga dos homens é uma luta genuinamente afromaranhense. De acordo com as pesquisas que ao longo dos anos temos realizado, observamos que a mesma encontra-se, pode-se dizer, no rol de tradições e manifestações populares maranhenses, que correm o risco de extinção, de tal maneira que convidamos a todo/as, capoeiras, pesquisadores, dançarinos, artistas, coreógrafos, e demais pessoas que lidam com pesquisa e movimento, para se fazerem presentes no Circo da Cidade, no Centro Histórico, Praia Grande. As inscrições são gratuitas e limitadas. Mais informações, constam do material, anexo.

Since last Sunday, Jan Gloeckner now has a new role in the world of Capoeira Angola. It means a lot to us in Kabula to do something like that. It wasn’t just a Roda de Capoeira and not just an event. Also it wasn’t just a title given to someone.

Although to our family and lineage, by following some fundamental principles of Capoeira Angola, it is a significant act in which he did not just have to prove he is a good capoeirista who is able to play for a long time, sing, hold the berimbau, host and talk with guests, express and hold himself in many games etc. This is just the surface of that ritual. The most important thing to us is to support Jan in his holistic understandng and subjective decision to accept this title and how it will reflect on his life from now on. It’s not what happened in one Roda which is important. What matters to us is what will happen from now on to the capoeirista and friend Jan. This precept is the most important from our point of view.

Besides the respect and gratitude to all the work he developed in Kabula for years and the relationship of trust and friendship that exists between us, we value the process of keeping and conducting through the capoeira dimention and its metaphorical symbolism. As well as the reflection generated as in the real world. Again, we do not give more merit to the objective or to the results of it, but rather then to the process and enrichment of everyday life from this new condition.

My respect for him and thanks to those ones which made an effort to take part in that especial night, on 29th April 2012 at Passing Clouds. Hope you all had fun, but also thrilled with that experience.

Desde o domingo passado, Jan Gloeckner passou a ter um novo papel no mundo da Capoeira Angola. Esse ato significa muito para nós do Kabula. Não consideramos que aquela tenha sido uma simples roda de capoeira oferecida a alguém e obviamente esta foi mais do que meramente uma atividade do grupo. Tão pouco compartilhamos com a ideia de super valorizar títulos ou status dado a um capoeirista numa cerimonia.

Contudo, para nossa família e linhagem e seguindo princípios fundamentais da capoeira angola, este foi um ato extremamente importante, não só porque Jan tinha que provar que é um bom capoeirista, ou que é capaz de jogar por um longo tempo, cantar, segurar o berimbau por tempo indeterminado, receber e conversar com os convidados, expressar-se e manter-se integro em seguidos jogos, etc. Esta é apenas a superfície deste ritual. A coisa mais importante para nós começa a partir de agora. Ou seja, o ato de apoiá-lo em sua visão holística e decisão subjetiva para aceitar este título e como isto vai refletir sobre sua vida de agora em diante. Não é o que aconteceu em uma Roda que é importante.

Além do respeito e agradecimento a todo o trabalho que ele vêm desenvolvendo no Kabula por anos a fio e pela relação de confiança e amizade que existe entre nós dois. O que importa agora é o que vai acontecer daqui pra frente ao capoeirista e amigo Jan. Este é o preceito mais importante do nosso ponto de vista. Valorizamos assim o processo de manter-se e de se conduzir integralmente dentro da capoeira e de seu universo metafórico. Assim como o reflexo que isso vai gerar dentro do mundo real. De fato, não damos mais valor à finalidade ou aos resultados, do que ao processo de enriquecimento da vida cotidiana a partir desta nova condição.

Meu respeito à Jan e agradecemos a todos aqueles que se esforçaram em participar daquela noite especial no Passing Clouds, dia 29 de Abril de 2012. Espero que todos vocês tenham se divertido, mas também se emocionado com a experiência.

It’s been a few Rodas already in the YMCA and in Angel and the results are great. Many capoeiristas ready and steady to play and to show how the community capoeira in London is strong and getting closer and commited with the movement day after day.

Com um repertório eclético e acima de tudo extremamente animado e dançante, a OV provou em London, que música pode ser misturada com circo, teatro e critica!O que assistimos então, foi uma orquestra voando acima das nuvens do Passing Clouds, abrindo um espaço para o sol passar e irradiar a alegria do Rio de Janeiro sobre Dalston. Um show que segundo os Passing Cloudianos, “vai ficar na historia daquela casa noturna!”
