—

We’d like to invite all from Rio and worldwide capoeira community, to a series of 3 Rodas to be held in front of the Valongo Quay (Cais do Valongo), starting on June 9th. This is an idea which aims to reconnect capoeira to the region of the old Little Africa (Pequena Africa) in Rio, as known in the old times and known this days as “Zona Portuaria do Rio”. O “Jogo de Angola”, as well as other cultural heritages of African origin, was emblematic in creating an identity to the (Rio born), and Brazil in general, since the early days of the colonial period. This was particularly true for the coastal capitals, where the slave market traded hundreds of thousands of African slaves.

At “Cais do Valongo”, considered the main slave depot of the Americas, was registered the entry of around 897,748 between 1758 to 1831, according to The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade database. That is, almost 10% of the 10 million slaves who were taken from the African continent from 1500 to 1850.

The main objective of this idea is to celebrate the afro-Brazilian cultural legacy, in a region of Rio in which the dynamics of that culture took place so dramatically, under the sign of infamy. On this day we want to consecrate, with all due respect, the “Roda do Valongo” to that memory and history that is now resurging underneath the “Cais da Imperatriz”, regards to the works in the area of the Port Zone, Gamboa, Morro da Providencia, Conceição and surroundings (see more info on the revitalization of the port and archaeological findings, at the bottom of this page).

Come join the first of the three Rodas which are scheduled and confirmed on the following dates (always the second Saturday of every month.

- June 9th 2012 * (Roda starts at 15hs)
- July 14th 2012
- August 23th 2012 – Exceptionally in august, that Roda will happen on the 23th (thursday) to coincide with the International Day of the Slave Trade Memory .

* In case of bad weather, Roda will be held on the ‘Armazém da Ação and Cidadania”, in front of the Cais do Valongo (to be confirmed).

This is a collective initiative, originally conceived by the directors and board of ACIMBA, and already has the adherence of many entities of Capoeira Angola, Regional and other styles. See above the list (listed alphabetically) of the participants already confirmed and to be confirmed.

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been writing some of our regular students to further clarify the important points of the new class payment system.

Basically £35 a month is a fantastic offer. People coming twice a week, paying £8/£6 per class, spend an average £64/£48 per month. That’s something like 45% / 37.5% discount!!!! Even if you come once a week, that’s £32 a month (£3 short our monthly price plan).

To have everyone on this system (at least the regulars) means less hassle during class registration as well as simpler and more objective control over Kabula’s finances. Way more practical.

But the most important point of this system is to give Kabula the ability to be better organized and, specially, plan ahead. It is part of the modernization and transformation of Kabula Arts & Culture in a Company that’s committed to deliver the most and the better of Capoeira, Percussion, Events, workshops and whatever we do from now on.

In other words, you pay less, we get more organized and we all grow together as a capoeira group.
To join, please go to How to Join Detailed page where we explain how to do it. In case you decide to do it yourself, you’ll need the following password to access the page with our bank details (oruoseb).

Forte abraço,

Mestre Carlão

P.S.: If there would be any reason why this offer wouldn’t suit you, we would be very grateful if you could let us know about it. That’s because the whole thing will only work if we can get enough people to join. We have got many people joining the Standing Order already, but we still need about 5 people more to break even in terms of venue rent and general overhead cots.
