5th Kabula Monthly Roda at Passing Clouds

English / Português

—

Since last Sunday, Jan Gloeckner now has a new role in the world of Capoeira Angola. It means a lot to us in Kabula to do something like that. It wasn’t just a Roda de Capoeira and not just an event. Also it wasn’t just a title given to someone.

Although to our family and lineage, by following some fundamental principles of Capoeira Angola, it is a significant act in which he did not just have to prove he is a good capoeirista who is able to play for a long time, sing, hold the berimbau, host and talk with guests, express and hold himself in many games etc. This is just the surface of that ritual. The most important thing to us is to support Jan in his holistic understandng and subjective decision to accept this title and how it will reflect on his life from now on. It’s not what happened in one Roda which is important. What matters to us is what will happen from now on to the capoeirista and friend Jan. This precept is the most important from our point of view.

Besides the respect and gratitude to all the work he developed in Kabula for years and the relationship of trust and friendship that exists between us, we value the process of keeping and conducting through the capoeira dimention and its metaphorical symbolism. As well as the reflection generated as in the real world. Again, we do not give more merit to the objective or to the results of it, but rather then to the process and enrichment of everyday life from this new condition.

My respect for him and thanks to those ones which made an effort to take part in that especial night, on 29th April 2012 at Passing Clouds. Hope you all had fun, but also thrilled with that experience.

Mestre Carlão and The Kabula Team!

–

(Check the complete schedule right below the introduction)

After six months back in his native city Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mestre Carlao will once again be returning to England for an intensive two month long tour from the beginning of March to the end of April 2012. The programme will be packed full of dynamic Capoeira Angola movement classes as well as music workshops, both with a focus on the vibrant city of Rio and the huge cultural transformation it is currently undergoing. As a result of an economic boom and the planning of two of the most important international sporting events, the Olympics 2016 and the World Cup 2014, Rio is experiencing a dramatic change with culture as a main focal point. Most interestingly, there has been a resurgence of interest in early 20th century Afro-Brazilian cultural practices in Rio, such as Capoeira Angola and old musical rhythms which have heavily influenced samba carioca. Mestre Carlao will be giving an exciting insight into this city’s transition, through Capoeira Angola movement and rhythms with the Pandeiro and Berimbau in his music workshops. The Capoeira Angola community in London is growing strong. There is a unique sense of unity, which in such a vast and diverse city like London, is very hard to generate. Each group has made such a fantastic effort to bring the community together, organizing events and many rodas, facilitating opportunities for capoeristas to meet and learn from each other through games. There has been a definite improvement, which will undoubtedly keep growing with the enthusiasm we’ve seen. Mestre Carlao’s two month tour intends to offer a cultural exchange between London and Rio, two vibrant cities which share a unique cosmopolitan identity. The tour promises a chance to learn and experience new developments from the current scene in Rio and an opportunity to take part in fun, energetic movement and musical workshops.

The Kabula Team

–

I am very happy to be back in London, a city that since 1996 have upheld me and my capoeira. I consider London my second city, after Rio de Janeiro and England my second country. Whenever I come to Brazil I feel that I always carry a little (or maybe much) of England with me, and the reverse also happens. Then, when I return to UK, I take back the experience of months I lived in and around Rio.
This dynamic has given me so many good things in my life. However, I can not lie, I’ve been paying a high price for the life I chose to take, but paid with pleasure and pride in my decision. Capoeira at the end wins and I have been growing and I keep learning so much from that. So, I continue on this path!
I am looking forward to meet with those who are always on the Rodas and are part of London Capoeira community (and also those who are just starting to be part of that) and at some point, talk, learn and exchange with each others experiences.

See you soon,
