BIDNA, Capoeira Aide

A roda at BIDNA, a Syrian NGO that help kids through capoeira

We’ve been contacted by a project in Syria that’s using capoeira to help Palestinian-Iraqi children heal psycho-social wounds. We’ve just started to talk about collaborations with them and we’re hoping to bring you more news at some point. Nevertheless, we thought their project is so interesting that it would be worth bringing your attention to it.

BIDNA Capoeira is a new NGO (non-Governmental Organization) that aims to improve the well being of children and communities through capoeira.

The idea began last year at Al-Tanf Refugee Camp in Syria. Capoeira gave a safe and healthy outlet for people to express their anger and emotions. All ages were involved in playing and singing which had a harmonising effect on the community.

UNICEF has written a report, published on their website, recognizing the change of energy at the camp and the program’s significant psycho-social benefits.

For more info on BIDNA, please visit their website at www.bidnacapoeira.org.

    Thanks for this information.

I am particularly interested in Capoeira Angola for it’s therapeutic dimensions and ability to foster social cohesion.

I’d be interested to see more information like this on the site.

Any Kabula outreach projects coming up?

    Regards,
    N

Great to have your interest in Bidna and thanks to Alex for posting this note.

We are building an NGO that taps into the international capoeira network to put together projects, we are currently working on beginning something in Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan apart from the work that we are doing in Syria. We already have experience in working with Iraqi and Palestinian refugees, youths in reformatory centres, vulnerable and abused women amongst other projects.

We are looking for people to join us, giving their time and expertise. We need people who are capoeira players, who have experience in writing proposals or fundraising, who can do programming, accountants, lawyers, social media experts…..!!

We are not a capoeira school. We use capoeira as the main tool but also use art, music, folk stories for instance in connecting with and helping the communities that we work with.

If you are interested or have any great ideas please do contact me. Also, check out our facebook site and our flikr site where you can see pictures and videos from some of our project work.

This is a massive project and we can only succeed through working together with all of you to bring capoeira to some of the most powerless and vulnerable peoples in the world – namely in refugee camps.

    AXE!

Thanks Ummul for your comments and for adding more info about BIDNA project. Capoeira for social inclusion and community engagement is been used for so long in Brazil already and it is great to see that it’s happening also in places like Syria, Palestine, Jordan … so necessary to do that!
Please, do keep us posted with more info, activities and programs you are planing as we will be happy to keep this momentum raising into the capoeira world and around. Count on us!
    Alex
